Frequently Asked Questions

   1)    What exactly is a canvas transfer?

A canvas transfer is a lithographic image that has been removed from its original paper and permanently affixed to artist’s canvas. (Lithograph is really just a fancy name for the type of printing process used in most every fine art print.) Originally, there was a paper fine art print of the exact same size and color of the transfer, and a blank piece of canvas. After the process is complete, there is a blank sheet of paper and the colors of the print are attached to the canvas.

2)    How do I clean my canvas transfer if it gets dirty or dusty?

Canvas transfers, like all artwork, should be kept clean, dry, and out of direct sunlight. You may lightly dust your canvas transfer with a soft, lint-free cloth as needed. Only if necessary, you may lightly clean the top surface with a moistened cotton cloth (use a mild, ammonia-free detergent if needed). Ammonia will not harm the actual image itself, but may remove the uppermost layer of varnish, which contains the ultraviolet protective finish to retard possible fading due to exposure to excessive light. Keep the wooden stretcher bars on the back dry to prevent possible warping, which may occur if they are saturated with water.

 3)    Why don’t you sell frames with your canvas transfers?

Frame choices are often even more personal than selection of images. So that you may best choose the type, style, and cost of frame that you desire, we have let you personalize your transfer with the frame you like best.

4)   Do I need a frame for my canvas transfer?

While a frame may enhance the appearance of your canvas transfer, it is perfectly acceptable to display it without a frame if you choose.

5)    What kind of frame do I need for my canvas transfer?

Canvas transfers are framed with the exact same style of frame that you would use for an original oil or acrylic painting – an open frame with a deeper opening than a photograph frame, without any glass in front.

    6)    Where can I buy a frame for my canvas transfer?

Frames for canvas transfers may be purchased at any art and craft store that sells supplies for artists, or of course any professional frame shop. Most of our images are standard sizes (8 x 10, 11 x 14, 12 x 16, 16 x 20, 18 x 24, 22 x 28, or 24 x 36 - all our ovals are a standard 8 x 10, 11 x 14, or 16 x 20) so that you have the option of purchasing a pre-made frame right off the shelf – no need for a custom frame unless you so desire. Discount craft stores such as Michaels, Ben Franklin, or Craft Warehouse, to name a few, often have a very competitive selection of frames available to choose from.

7)    Should I put glass over my canvas transfer to protect it?

Glass should never be put over a canvas transfer if it may be avoided. Glass will detract from the rich look of your transfer. We only recommend using glass if it is necessary to prevent damage to the transfer from other sources (small children or pets, moisture, etc.).

8)    Will my canvas transfer fade?

Anything will fade if exposed to prolonged ultraviolet rays, such as direct sunlight. Your transfer has been treated with an independently patented ultraviolet protective coating that has been shown to have no appreciable fading after 50 years of “normal” ultraviolet exposure, in an accelerated aging test conducted in 1999. The colors from each transfer come from the original paper art print used to create it – the transfer will fade significantly less than the original paper print would have done under identical conditions. Please note that prolonged exposure to tobacco smoke has been shown to greatly reduce the level of protection that the UVLS finish provides, as well as accelerate overall ultraviolet damages in general.

9)    Can you make a canvas from my personal picture?

We can put your personal photograph onto canvas for you.  The photo must NOT be copyrighted.  You have your choice of 8 x 10 or 11 x 14 sizes, and oval frames are available if the subject will fit properly.  You may send us your standard photograph (no negatives, please) and we will enlarge it to your choice of size as is possible.  Remember that whenever you enlarge an image, some deterioration of quality will occur.  Your original will be returned with your finished canvas, but please do not send irreplaceable pictures, as mail is sometimes lost.  The process will take just over a week at our plant, plus the time for shipping in both directions.

10)    Can you put my digital image onto canvas?

Yes, we can transfer a digital image.  Please have the image at least 600 dpi and not less than 6 inches on the long side.  For best results, please save the image as a TIFF file for IBM (we also support GIF, JPG, PCX, and BMP formats, to name just a few, but best results are obtained from TIFF files.)  You may send the file either on a CD or via e-mail to sales@galleryreplicas.com (If the file will fit on a floppy disk, it is most likely not of high enough quality.)
